How to Adapt to Changes in Mobility as You Age

A change in mobility is something most people experience as they age, though the degree of the change varies significantly from person to person. When someone is starting to have issues that limit their mobility, there are a number of things they can do to continue staying safe. Some of those include the following.

Consider Moving to a Place With Assistance

It may be best to consider moving to somewhere that is safer and designed with mobility needs in mind. Those who may need a number of modifications to live at home or who may be safer living somewhere with more help may consider assisted living from McKnight Place. This allows them to get the help they need now and in the future as their mobility needs change.

Add Handrails Throughout the Home

Handrails give the person something to hold onto as they move through the home, making it less likely they’ll experience a fall. Handrails can be added in the places they’ll be needed the most, whether that’s in the bathroom to help with getting out of the shower or along hallways where they might not be able to see as easily at night.

Consider Adding Ramps

Ramps can make it easier to get in and out of the home, especially for those who use a scooter or wheelchair. Even those who don’t, though, may find a ramp easier to navigate than to use steps to get into or out of their home. Temporary ramps can be installed in places where a permanent one may not be possible.

Make Kitchen Modifications

It may be a good idea to look into kitchen modifications to make it easier for the person to cook at home. Induction stoves are safer, as the area around the pots doesn’t get hot. Pull-out drawers can make it easier to access items in the kitchen. Placing heavy items where they’re easily accessible helps prevent the person from having to lift them.

Start Using Smart Home Devices

Smart home devices can be a great way to help seniors around the home and to keep them safe. Instead of stumbling down a dark hallway to get to bed at night, leave the lights on. Once in the bedroom, use a smart assistant to tell the lights to turn off. This way, there’s no need to walk in a dark home. Smart home devices can also be used to call for help if needed, set timers for various activities, and a lot more.

Add Lighting to the Home

Take the time to add more lighting throughout the home so it’s easier to see at night. Include night lights down long hallways or in the bathroom. It is a good idea to use ones that have motion sensors so they will automatically come on when they’re needed and turn off when no one is in the room anymore. Also, add plenty of lighting in areas like the kitchen so it’s easier for seniors to see what they’re doing.

Adapting to a change in mobility can be challenging, but there are a number of things to consider. Think about the person’s mobility challenges and what may be needed to help keep them safe. This may mean moving or making changes to the home to make it a safer place to live.
