If you’re in Dubrovnik over the summer you are in for a real treat with the prospect of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival which kicks off on the 10th of July and runs all the way through to the 25th of August.
There is such richness and variety here – from lighthearted fun to the more serious pleasures of music and theatre – during Croatia’s greatest cultural event. Here you’ll be treated to some of Croatia’s best-known artists as well many internationally distinguished performers – with all events being held in some of the most beautiful Dubrovnik locations such as the Sponza Palace, Lokrum Island, St Blaise Church, Lazaretto, the Rector’s Palace Atrium and many others.
The festival has been running since the early 1950’s and was born from the idea of harmonising the renaissance and baroque atmosphere of Dubrovnik with its creative tradition in theatre, literature, drama and music. This year there will be over 80 performances with the best drama and musical performances awarded the prestigious “Orlando” award. The opening ceremony will be held in front of St Blaise Church and it’s an extravaganza not to be missed. The occasion will showcase Croatian theatre, drama, folk dance, ballet, a number of choirs, an orchestra and even a brass band.
So much choice – how will you decide what to see first? The key not-to-be-missed highlights of the festival include the Gala Concert, the Linđo Folklore Ensemble, and the 18th Century Venetian comedy, ‘La Bottega del Caffè’ by Carlo Goldoni.
