The Dubrovnik area is full of places that carry a special story. We found one of them in Zaton, a beautiful bay eight kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik. As we walked down the old stone staircase, it was clear to us that this wasn’t one those restaurants that we could easily forget. We were welcomed by the hosts on the spacious terace, right by the seaside. The current owners, just like many generations before them, devoted their lives to this very restaurant. Family Gverovic opened the restaurant in 1966, and it’s not a secret that Restaurant Gverovic- Orsan offers the best seafood in the area of Dubrovnik since the very first day.
The restaurant is a part of centuries-old house, Orsan, once used as a private warehouse for small boats of Renaissance Dubrovnik nobles. Family Gverović preserved the spirit of past times; Here, you can see the handmade wooden tables, restored artifacts of old ships that had sunk hundreds of years ago, old galley’s parts and many other interesting things…

“Our chefs use the traditional Mediterranean recipes and spices to make each meal a little piece of art. For this reason, we insist on fresh ingredients… ” says the owner’s daughter, Nea Gverović.
“Right behind the house there is a garden where we grow a variety of vegetables … Olive oil is also homemade and it comes from our family olive grove. There’s a four hundred olive trees there …” continued Nea.
Many celebrities have recognized this place… Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Bono Wox, Carolina de Monaco, Lisa Kudrow, Daniel Day-Lewis, Rade Šerbedžija, popular football players like Davor Šuker, Luka Modrić, Mateo Kovačić … The place has always been popular among politicians and Russian millionaires, but understandably, the owners did not want to reveal all the names.
“Names are not important. Every guest in our restaurant can expect the same hospitality and equally good food. Black risotto, pasta with seafood, shrimp, seafood gnocchi, prawns … The choice is not simple, but whatever you choose from our menu – you won’t make a mistake. ” Nea told us.
Indeed, we have tried the best stew in our lives here. The recipe for this meal is created by Mrs. Eta, the owner’s wife, who gave her touch to the well-known traditional meals on the menu.
“The menu was created by Igor’s mother, a passionate chef whose dishes have become the synonymous for the top gastronomy. She always cooked with the heart, and the guests recognized it. My husband Igor and I continued in the same direction, which is not hard since we’re both gourmands “, says Mrs. Eta, while sipping a glass of white wine, and continues: “Wine is important, and if it’s choosen well, it compliments the food perfectly. Here you can choose between top white and red wines. Our selection includes fine domestic and foreign wines. “
